Certificate IV in Training and Assessment TAA40104 (full course)

Aim

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is the nationally accredited qualification needed to be able to train and assess others in Vocational Education and Training. To gain the full qualification you will need to complete 14 units of competency, consisting of 12 core units and 2 elective units. Upon successful completion of all units you will receive a certificate qualification, TAA40104 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, recognised by employers and other colleges nationally.

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment TAA40104 is designed for both people who are working as workplace trainers and assessors in not-for-profit organisations and also those who plan to move into the training and assessing field.

This course is delivered via blended learning, which is a combination of in class and self paced study or through e-learning.
The classroom-based course involves five blocks of classroom delivery over 24 weeks with a 1-2 week period between the blocks. This totals 110 hours face-to-face delivery. Outside of the 13 days (total), students are required to complete projects and assessment tasks.

For e-learning, the units TAADEL402B, TAADEL301B and TAADEL404B and TAAASS402B require audio and visual assessment by observation, so you will need to be able to organise a training and assessment session during your course. If you have any questions, please ask us. You will receive a user name and password to enter your online course as soon as your enrolment is processed. During your study contact with your trainer is by phone and email.

Target audience

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment TAA40104 is a requirement for gaining employment as a Trainer and Assessor within private and government Registered Training Organisations, and in a similar role within in organisations that are not RTOs. An emerging trend is for inclusion of training and assessing qualifications – or units therein - in ‘mainstream’ jobs across a broad variety of occupations and industries, especially not-for-profit organisations.

Features of a level IV qualification include: understanding of a broad knowledge base incorporating theoretical concepts; utilise a range of communication skills such as: listening, questioning, reading, interpreting and writing documents; work with colleagues to compare, review, and evaluate assessment processes and outcomes; manage work relationships and seek feedback from colleagues and clients on professional performance; show research and analytical skills and interpret workplace specifications; as well as plan, prioritise and organise workflow.

Employability Skills

The application of Employability Skills – communication, teamwork, problem solving, initiative and enterprise, planning and organising, self-management, learning and technology – are holistically assessed in the evidence gathering techniques against the relevant industry approaches and employability skill framework. Unit One: Work effectively in VET

This unit specifies the competency required to work effectively in the policy and operating environment of the vocational education and training sector.

Unit Two: Foster and promote an inclusive learning culture

This unit addresses the responsibilities of all persons in a training and/or assessment organisation to promote a positive and inclusive learning culture which actively acknowledges, respects and builds on individual differences, and integrates principles which underpin inclusivity into all training and/or assessment practices. In this unit the principles of inclusivity are applied to working with both colleagues clients.

Unit Three: Ensure a safe and healthy learning environment

This unit provides a focus for occupational health and safety (OHS) in the vocational education and training sector. It covers the legislative and common law duty of care responsibilities of trainers/facilitators, assessors and other parties in the provision of training and/or assessment services.

Unit Four: Use Training Packages to meet client need

This unit specifies the competency required to use Training Packages and accredited courses as a tool to support industry, organisation or individual competency development needs.

Unit Five: Design and develop learning programs

This unit specifies the competency required to conceptualise, design, develop and evaluate learning programs to meet an identified need for a group of learners, using appropriate criteria. Criteria may include endorsed competency standards and other specifications such as organisational performance standards, product equipment specifications and workplace procedures.

Unit Six: Plan and organise group-based delivery

This competency involves developing a delivery plan that is used by the trainer/facilitator to guide and manage delivery to a group. It encompasses interpreting the learning environment and delivery requirements for the identified group of learners, developing session plans, and preparing and organising the resources required.

Unit Seven: Facilitate individual learning

This unit specifies the competency required to facilitate individual learning through a one-on-one relationship between a learner and facilitator.

Unit Eight: Facilitate work-based learning

This unit addresses the processes, skills and knowledge involved in using the work process and the work environment as the basis for learning in the workplace.

Unit Nine: Facilitate group-based learning

This unit specifies the competency required to facilitate learning by individuals within a group. The competency of delivering training and facilitating learning to a group involves preparing, guiding supporting and managing learners using a range of delivery methods, knowledge, skills and behaviours that enhance learning.

Unit Ten: Plan and organise assessment

This unit addresses the competence of planning the assessment process and making the organisational arrangements which enable assessment to occur. It includes assessments carried out as part of a Recognition of Prior Learning Process (RPL) or as part of a learning and assessment pathway.

Unit Eleven: Assess competence

This unit addresses the competence of conducting competency assessment in accordance with a developed assessment plan. It includes assessment for recognition of prior learning (RPL) or as part of a learning and assessment pathway.

Unit Twelve: Develop assessment tools

This unit specifies the competence required to develop assessment tools. An assessment tool is used to guide the collection of quality evidence in the assessment process. It includes the instruments for collecting evidence, based on the selected assessment methods and the procedures to be followed in conducting the assessment.

Unit Thirteen: Participate in assessment validation

This unit specifies the competence required to participate in an assessment validation process. Validation is a process involving assessors working in collaboration to review, compare and evaluate their assessment process and their assessment outcomes in relation to the same unit/s of competency. This includes validating assessment methods/tools, the evidence that was collected using these assessment methods/tools and the interpretation of that evidence to make a judgement of competence.

Unit Fourteen: Develop teams and individuals

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to determine individual and team development needs and to facilitate the development of the workgroup. This unit applies to individuals with a broad knowledge of learning and development who apply their skills in addressing development needs to meet team objectives. They may have responsibility to provide guidance or to delegate aspects of tasks to others.

Study choices

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is available for individuals by the following 3 options:

  1. e-Learning
  2. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
    This is based on a portfolio and interview approach to RPL. Your application does not automatically mean you will be successful in all units. For those where you cannot provide evidence to the standards required, you can go on to study individual units at $150.00 per unit. On enrolment you will receive access to a unique online RPL tool which will help you select and save evidences online and map evidences automatically across the units. RPL should not be a difficult process providing you have access to proof that you are competent in the units
  3. Combination of distance learning study and RPL.

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is available for groups/organisations by:

Duration

The expected completion for the online course is estimated at 4 weeks per unit at 4-6 hours per week. There are 14 units in the course (approximately 56 weeks for the full course). This course is open to all people over 18 years of age and there are no pre-requisites. On successful completion of this course, students may be qualified to gain employment as a trainer and assessor in their chosen industry.

Support

For distance learning: on enrolment each student is allocated a tutor who will provide support throughout the course. Contact with the tutor will be not less than monthly, but is usually more frequent, and will be in accordance with the tutoring schedule agreed between student and tutor.

You will then be contacted by the School Administration Manager who will confirm with you any opportunities for RPL and/or Credit Transfer for prior studies, and explain the enrolment procedure in greater detail and process your enrolment.
