Certificate IV in Volunteer Program Coordination CHC42708

Course Aim

This qualification addresses work involving the coordination of volunteers within a program or organisation. These workers may work in a range of industry sectors and in a complex, regularly changing context, including coordinator of volunteers, community development worker and manager of volunteers.

They require competencies to perform a broad range of tasks, including evaluating and improving current practices and providing leadership and guidance to others in organising their work activities.

Starting points

Enrolments can be accepted for the full Certificate IV course or for individual units. Students wishing to enrol in individual units should discuss their requirements with School staff. It is recommended that participants in the qualification have some experience either as a volunteer or in a role involving supervision of volunteers.

Unit One: Promote team effectiveness

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to promote teamwork. It involves developing team plans to meet expected outcomes, leading the work team, and proactively working with the management of the organisation.

Unit Two: Use targeted communication skills to build relationships

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to apply specific workplace communication techniques to build and maintain relationships with clients and colleagues based on respect and trust

Unit Three: Work within a relevant legal and ethical framework

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to work within a legal and ethical framework that supports duty of care requirements

Unit Four: Recruit and coordinate volunteers

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to develop and support volunteer workers in an agency

Unit Five: Maintain workplace WHS processes

This unit specifies the workplace performance required by an employee with supervisory responsibilities, to maintain organisation WHS processes

Unit Six: Plan, organise and facilitate learning in the workplace

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to plan, organise and facilitate learning for individuals in a workplace.

Unit Seven: Manage projects

This unit covers the management of a project or a selection of a large project. Students will apply project management skills, meeting timelines, quality standards, budgetary limits and other requirements set for the project.

Unit Eight: Develop work priorities

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan one’s own work schedules, to monitor and to obtain feedback on work performance and development. It also addresses the requirement to take responsibility for one’s own career planning and professional development.

Unit Nine: Provide work skill instruction

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to conduct individual and group instruction and demonstrate work skills, using existing learning resources in a safe and comfortable learning environment. The unit covers the skills and knowledge required to determine the success of both the training provided and one's own personal training performance. It emphasises the training as being driven by the work process and context.

Unit Ten: Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers

This unit deals with the cultural and linguistic awareness required for effective communication and cooperation with persons of diverse cultures and linguistic needs

Study choices

The Certificate IV in Volunteer Program Coordination is available:

  1. Externally by distance learning for individual applicants
  2. By a combination of direct delivery and external preparation and assignment work (offered in partnership with organisations)
  3. By submitting a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) application

Duration

The minimum time required to complete all requirements of the Certificate, by either mode of delivery, would normally be expected that students would complete the certificate in nine months depending on the amount of regular volunteer hours. Students may wish to extend their studies over a longer period.

Support

On enrolment each student is allocated a tutor who will support the student throughout the course. Contact with the tutor will be not less than monthly, but is usually more frequent, and will be in accordance with the tutoring schedule agreed between student and tutor.
