Certificate II in Active Volunteering CHC20208
AimThis course builds on the basic generic skills required by all volunteer involving organisations (consistent with AQF level 2) and includes basic administration and communication strategies, working effectively with in clients and colleagues (paid and volunteer) and taking limited responsibility for their work output and learning; engaging in safe work practices (OH&S); and, assessing and recording information relevant to the job. Target audienceCertificate II in Active Volunteering is a nationally accredited qualification from the Community Services Training Package CHC08 designed especially for volunteers. The qualification is designed for volunteers to learn additional skills and recognise their current skills, work effectively in the organisation of their choice and gain a qualification that provides a pathway to other vocational qualifications and improve their employability skills. Because much of the assessment is done in conjunction with volunteer work, applicants must be able to demonstrate that their studies are supported by volunteering. The training is logbook-based. |

Employability Skills
The application of Employability Skills – communication, teamwork, problem solving, initiative and enterprise, planning and organising, self-management, learning and technology – are holistically assessed in the evidence gathering techniques against the relevant industry approaches and employability skill framework. Starting points
Enrolments can be accepted for the full Certificate II course or for individual units. Students wishing to enrol in individual units should discuss their requirements with School staff. Note: students who have already completed the Certificate I in Active Volunteering receive credit transfer for three units: Be an effective volunteer CHCVOL201A*, Develop work priorities BSBWOR404A* and Participate in OHS processes HLTOHS200A*.

Unit One: Be an effective volunteer
This unit covers what it means to be a volunteer and deals with the volunteer's orientation to the organisation.
Unit Two: Undertake basic administrative duties
This unit describes the knowledge and skills required by workers to undertake the range of basic administrative duties required in community services organisations.
Unit Three: Participate in OHS processes
This unit specifies the workplace performance required for an entry level employee to participate in OHS processes in the workplace, in order to ensure their own health and safety at work, as well as that of others in the workplace who may be affected by their actions.
Unit Four: Work with others
This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to work with others across a range of community service contexts.
Unit Five: Communicate with people accessing the services of the organisation
This unit covers the knowledge and skills required by community services workers who may have limited contact with clients in terms of content and timing and operate under direct supervision.
Unit Six: Deliver a service to customers
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to deliver all aspects of customer service at an introductory level. It includes creating a relationship with customers, identifying their needs, delivering services or products and processing customer feedback.
Unit Seven: Process and maintain workplace information
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to collect, process, store and maintain workplace information and systems. It also includes the maintenance of filing and records systems.
Unit Eight: Develop work priorities
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan one’s own work schedules, to monitor and to obtain feedback on work performance and development. It also addresses the requirement to take responsibility for one’s own career planning and professional development.
Unit Nine: Use business technology
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select, use and maintain a range of business technology, including the effective use of computer software to organise information and data.
Study choices
The Certificate II in Active Volunteering is available:
- Externally by distance learning for individual applicants
- By a combination of direct delivery and external preparation and assignment work (offered in partnership with organisations)
- By submitting a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) application

Duration
The minimum time required to complete all requirements of the Certificate, by either mode of delivery, must include 30 hours of volunteer placement. It would normally be expected that students would complete the certificate in nine months depending on the amount of regular volunteer hours. Students may wish to extend their studies over a longer period.
Support
On enrolment each student is allocated a tutor who will support the student throughout the course. Contact with the tutor will be not less than monthly, but is usually more frequent, and will be in accordance with the tutoring schedule agreed between student and tutor.
