Legally Speaking II (2 days)

This workshop covers the full range of legal topics relating to the employment and management of volunteers in corporate and not-for-profit organisations. It is relevant to all paid staff and volunteers who have responsibility for recruiting and managing volunteers. The workshop is presented by the School's legal trainer.

Aim

To introduce participants to the legal requirements and obligations of employing and managing volunteers.

Topics include:

  1. The "core" module which comprises:
    1. Distinction between volunteers and paid staff
    2. Rights and responsibilities of volunteers and organisations
    3. Duty-of-care and negligence
  2. Occupational Health and Safety: Including the Civil Liability Act and the implications for volunteers and the organisation
  3. Anti-discrimination Law: Implications for volunteers, managers and organisations
  4. Confidentiality and Privacy
  5. Grievance Procedures and Dismissal Processes
  6. Insurance Cover for Volunteers: Includes insurance, public liability and directors liability
  7. Child Protection Laws and Volunteers
