On the road with Strategic Skills Program information sessions

13 March 2009

During February and March, the SVM travelled to Wollongong, Newcastle and Sydney’s north side to conduct its 'Six steps to apply for funding through the Strategic Skills Program (SSP)' information sessions for volunteer managers and member organisations. Our thanks go to Volunteering Illawarra, Hunter Volunteer Centre and Northside Community Forum for helping to organise these sessions among your volunteer networks.

Tony Ross, CEO of the Hunter Volunteer Centre, said of the program: “SSP works on so many levels. Firstly, there’s the flexibility to obtain Diploma qualifications where the learning format accommodates for other factors in our lives. Secondly, the learning on offer is the foundation of good management practises and just fits the gaps. Thirdly, the cost is so cheap it would be crazy not to invest in our staff. Finally, it’s a great opportunity to offer our staff a pathway to gain a recognised qualification.”

The School has also visited the DET offices in Newcastle and Wollongong to forge all-important links to establish the School’s credibility and commitment for the two year program.

This funded training for clusters of units from Registered Training courses, for example, diplomas and certificates, or full qualifications, needs to address areas of key skill deficiency in priority industry sectors, which include Community Services and Health. o support their application, organisations need to work with the School to develop a strong business case, that is, why the training is required and how it will improve the organisation’s effectiveness. Clustered training refers to 3–4 units from the Diploma of Business or Management or the certificate II in Business that best fits your immediate up-skilling need.

If you, or your organisation, are interested in learning more about this funded training, contact Mark Tippett at the School to discuss your needs, on 9261 3600 or email mtippett@volunteering.com.au. Alternatively visit the School’s website at www.svm.net.au.
