Four new Contract Trainers commenced with the School following induction last month – Kathryn Leaney, Tulsi Van De Graaff, Ray Bredenkamp and William Boag.  All have experience as volunteers and collectively have experience in the public service, private enterprise and the not-for-profit sector. They will significantly increase the depth and breadth of experience and expertise of the pool of trainers, as well as enhancing the School’s responsiveness.

This year has been one of consolidation and building for the School, to allow for a planned expansion of activities and services in 2009. The demand for PD Workshops and Customised Training was steady but enrolments in Accredited Courses more than doubled.

The School of Volunteer Management held its inaugural gradation ceremony on Wednesday, 3 September to acknowledge the hard work, commitment and achievements of its Accredited Course students who recently met the requirements of their diploma of certificate courses.

Have you been volunteering for some time? Why not reward your efforts with a Cert I in Active Volunteering through a recognition pathway. The Cert I in Active Volunteering is a six-unit program with a voluntary experience component of 30 hours. This program may be studied through distance learning with support from a supervisor, or through RPL.

A pathway of opportunity
Avoid months or years of study and obtain your nationally recognised qualification (a certificate or diploma) for 20% less than the normal course fee if you are a member of The Centre for Volunteering.

The School has recently introduced a number of individual training options for managers and coordinators of volunteers, with some options offering personal training and tutoring. Individual Training covers a large number of topics, can be delivered immediately and is very cost effective.

Workshops conducted by SpeakersBank

Following pilot workshops conducted in late 2007, the School of Volunteer Management partnered with SpeakersBank to deliver in New South Wales Speak Up! Speak Out! Workshops. The workshops were conducted by Dale Rees-Bevan of SpeakersBank Australia Inc, who has been involved in public speaking and training since 1993. She is an experienced competitor in international speaking competitions and has set-up public speaking programs in South Africa and the UK, which are still running today. Dale was a director of SpeakersBank UK before moving to Australia in 2005 and setting up SpeakersBank Australia, of which she is a director.

The Inner West Training Network provides information and training services to not-for-profit groups in Sydney’s Inner West. The recently formed network will ensure that training and information services across the Inner West are: accessible, affordable, appropriate and appealing.

The School of Volunteer Management's application to be listed on the NSW Department of Education and Training's 2007–2008 APL for the Strategic Skills Program has been accepted. The School is now approved to deliver its eight Diploma of Business units to a number of metropolitan and regional areas in NSW.
